Pattern Description:

Make your own drum from a humble bottle gourd.

This 26 page tutorial will show you step by step how to make a playable drum that you will be proud of for many many years.

These are the exact steps I use when teaching a class!

Learn about :

Choosing the right gourd
Cutting and cleaning the gourd
Preparing the Drum Head
Wrapping the Holding Ring
Adding the rope around the lip of the drum head for added strength and color (this is optional)

We also discuss:

Attaching the head by stapling
Attaching the head by lacing
Making your own leather lace

A Drum Head Hole template is included.

Materials:

  • A bottle gourd - We will be using a bottle gourd for our drum
  • Goat skin for the Drum Head,
  • A 5-6" metal ring to attach the drum head
  • Drum Cord to attach the drum head to the ring.
  • Ribbon or leather to cover the ring if preferred. Can be cut from the goat skin.
  • Black spray paint
  • Clear Spray Acrylic paint

You Will Also Need:

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Awl or hole punch
  • Saw for cutting the top and bottom off the gourd
  • Drill
  • Large Spoon or scaper to clean out the gourd
  • Face Mask
  • Large Spoon or scaper to clean out the gourd
  • Large embroidery needle
