This easy, wide-rib pattern is a great project for beginners. It takes less time than a scarf (can be completed in a day) and predominately uses standard knit and purl stitches throughout.
Detailed directions are provided for creating a one-row buttonhole opening with slip stitches and cable cast on stitches.
