This design is a combination of two very old, classic Norwegian patterns. The leaves pattern is an old design, first published in Annichen Sibberns book "Norske strikkemonstre" (1905) - and it reminds me of the antique "rosemaling" designs seen on antiques from Telemark and Setesdal in Norway. This leaves-pattern is a repetition over 20 stitches. The star is the classic little selbustar, famous from Norwegian knitting designs for centuries.
It reminds me of the starry winternights in the mountains of Telemark. The star pattern is a repetition over 14 stitches.
In the middle ages, when electricity was still unknown, the stars were loved as symbols of life and energy.
Stars were often knitted into pillows and nightgowns, as protecting symbols against the darkness of the night and the unknown.
For the same reason, stars were also knitted into clothing used in wintertime - as winter was considered the night of the year.
Pattern PDF includes 2 large crisp, stitch diagrams - with both black on white, and white on black versions.
A lovely design on a hat, beanie, or, scarf, sweater or blanket.
