Basic Skills Necessary:

  • understanding of lace design
  • understanding of working in the round
  • understanding of attaching a knitted-on border while binding off live sts
  • understanding of how to work cables

Pattern Description:

I designed this for my dh's 60th birthday in October. He loves to watch college football, but often gets chilled. This blanket is a perfect lap blanket or worn around the shoulders, shawl-style.

The color I chose is a beautiful, tonal mahogany that matches our leather furniture ... my dh loves it!

Ciarnan's Cover is a knit-from-the-center-out circle lap blanket (or circular shawl) done in worsted-weight wool on large needles. An eight-pointed, cabled star merges into eyelet triangles and twisted-stitch cables to create a sampler that, when viewed as a whole, creates a lovely snowflake design. The attach-as-you-go border, reminiscent of the ocean waves pounding the Emerald Isle, adds an elegant finishing touch. The final diameter is 60" to keep you and your loved ones cozy all winter long.

Directions are both charted and round-by-round.

NOTE: Colleen's Cover ( is the big sister of this design; Colleen is 72-inch diameter beauty with a self-bordering edge.

Hi, my name is Mary Gildersleeve. I began designing shortly after teaching myself to knit at the age of 8, primarily because I do not take commands very well and I also could not afford the fancy yarns back then. Knitting and designing were my constant activities throughout undergrad, grad school and family life until, in 1997, I finally went professional and established By Hand, With Heart ... ...
