Pattern Description:

Each counterpane square for this heirloom baby blanket is made in the round from the center out. Instructions for the counterpane square are both charted and written out in text. Create a larger blanket (48" by 60") by knitting 20 squares and omitting the border. Needles: 5 double-pointed needles, size 7 (4.5 mm); one size 7 (4.5 mm) 16" needle; one size 7 (4.5 mm) 24" needle; one size 7 (4.5mm) 29" needle; one crochet hook, size H-8 (5 mm) for cast on only. Notions: one cable needle, blunt-end yarn needle. Color shown is #451 Dusty Sage


In pattern, each square measures approx 12" square.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Approx 36 x 36" excluding border; can easily be made larger by adding more motifs


  • DK weight yarn, approximately 1800 yds
  • 5 Double-pointed knitting needles, size US 7 (4.50 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • One size US 7 (4.5mm) circular knitting needle, 16"
  • One size US 7 (4.5mm) circular knitting needle, 24"
  • One size US 7 (4.5mm) circular knitting needle, 29"

1800 yards of DK weight
