Hi Maree, I'm sorry you're not happy with the pattern, but I think you've mis-read the yarn requirements. The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and I've added in brackets that this translates to Aran for UK knitters, as worsted weight is a little difficult to come by in the UK (I don't know which country you live in). Nowhere does the pattern mention 8ply yarn. it says that the yarn used needs to be 8 wpi (wraps per inch), Wraps per inch is another guide to the weight of your yarn and the size needle you should be using to get the correct tension. It is the number of times you can wrap one inch of that yarn round your needle.Ply on the other hand, is completely different. It is the number of strands that are twisted together to make that yarn. You can have an 8 ply lace weight yarn or an 8 ply chunky weight yarn. They will both have 8 strands of the fibre twisted together, but there is no way you could substitute a lace weight for a chunky and still get the same size finished item.As I have said, you need to use worsted or UK aran weight yarn to make these boots. It is also worth noting that they are knit on a smaller needle than is often used for this weight of yarn because, unlike a sweater or scarf, which benefits from some drape, these boots need to be fairly rigid to hold their shape. The pattern also clearly provides the tension that is required to knit the boots, and you are requested to knit tension square. I suspect that you omitted this part, or you would have realised that you were using the wrong weight of yarn. Many, many people have been delighted with the pattern and have knit them successfully to the correct size. I'm sure if you use the correct weight of yarn, and knit a tension square to see if you need to go up or down a needle size, I'm sure you will too.
Hi, sorry to be putting a bad comment up but I tried this pattern, adapting it to 8ply with 3.75mm needles and should have got a 3-6 month size but got something that would fit a 2 year old. Clearly Aran is 10ply and I used 8ply so it should have been smaller. The idea is great and it came out looking very good, just way too big even if the pattern was for 8ply. I'll be adapting to smaller needles and the next size down to get the 3 month size. Sorry, but I have been knitting for 43 years and the needle and ply sizes in this pattern are wrong and should be adjusted before there are more disappointed people like me who make them, especially if they use 10ply Aran. I've adapted plenty of 10ply Aran to 8ply and all have worked out great but not this one. Something is clearly wrong! I'd be using 8ply and 3.25mm needles to get the right sizing. I would add again though that there is nothing wrong with the pattern itself, the boot turned out great. Just wanted to warn people so they can adjust it so it will size correctly.
