Some have knitted this pattern with cotton, silk, and other wool blend with great results. The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn. So as long as you keep to this yarn weight and stay true to the gauge, you'll have lots of choices. Really the best thing to do is look at the finished projects in Ravelry to get ideas. You can also visit your local yarn shop to get suggestions for yarn substitutions. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/soleto-vest/people

Absolutely. If you have access to Ravelry, check out the projects that have been posted for the Soleto Vest. See especially Kaplia's Vest. She knitted it with a colorful stripped yarn. Thanks for asking. :)

There are several different gauges (stockinette, cables, twisted sts) that were taken into consideration in establishing sizes for this pattern. Regardless of the yarn you select, it will be important to keep the gauge as suggested in the pattern. A lighter weight yarn at the suggested gauge may give you a looser stitch. That may or may not work well. You'll have to swatch using the different types of stitches to see if that's the look you want.

Wow, this is a gorgeous vest. I love the details. I need to practice my knitting some more before I can make something like this.
