I just knitted these for my first grandchild. My daughter in law loved them so much she put them up on her facebook page. Now all her friends want a pair too! Simply fab little boots!
I don't knit (actually, I can knit a straight line, but even that's iffy) but I'd like to learn. Would this be a good project to start with or is it too complicated for a beginner? I do crochet a lot.
I think you would need quite a lot of help if you are an absolute beginner
I agree with Julie, I am an experienced knitter and I can decipher a pattern easily usually. This one had me stumped at first, but I mastered it eventually. No I do not think you should try this one straight off. There is a very simple pattern that is dead easy for beginners, very adaptable to variations once you have made a pair, All you need is 2 balls 8ply, pair of No 5 needles, cast on 25 stitches leaving a length of yarn to use later for sewing up., sl1, k11, make1, k1, make 1, k12. To make 1, knit into yarn between next 2 stitches. Row 2..sl 1, K10, Purl1, k3, P1, K 10, Does that add up, should be 2 extra stitches each increase row. row 3, as row 2 but keeping purls in line, increase 2 stitches making 5 between the two purls. row 4 K. row 5. increase in centre panel again as before making 7 stitches in panel, which you will find once you have sewn it all up that this forms the sole of the slipper. work 1 more knit row and one more increase row and you should have enough width by now for a small slipper, continue with garter stitch keeping purls in line as before, until you have approximately, 2 inches work. change pattern to k1, p1, for rest of desired length. To finish off, k2 tog across row, turn and work in keeping with the ribbing, k 2tog in this next row, break off yarn leaving enough to thread back through your stitches twice, you can now see the shape of the slipper. Fold your cast on row in half, sew this with the tail left at cast on, This forms the back of the foot. Then sew from the toe to the beginning of the rib. I make a little rope of the same yarn, add in white or some other contrasting colour, make pom poms and once you have threaded the rope through around the ankle section, make some little pom poms and sew to ends. These are very adaptable to any size, and it is also possible to cast on an extra 6/8 stitches at the start and once you have reached to front of the ankle, cast 3/4 stitches off at beginning of next two rows, to make a little cuff, looks like a boot. Very cute on little babies, Good luck. I hope that is clear. I just scribbled this down as I went along. Oh I just thought, I am in Australia, so I guess the yarn size should read DK?? and the needles I am not sure about. look up a conversion chart, I think Aus is similar to UK. Sorry about that bit.

This is a super pattern ,but I found using a circular knitting pin very fiddly, so I use a set of short pins, and that works for me.
Ooooh these are so cute. I can't use 10ply yarn for these can I? I don't knit myself but I'm buying yarn for my mum :)
They would knit up too big using 10 ply. If it was the largest size you needed you could try knitting the smallest size, but in 10 ply and hope it was roughly right, but personally I would stick to the 8 ply

I love these boots! How difficult do you think it would be to alter the smallest pattern? I would like to try to make them to fit American Girl dolls. Their feet are 2 1/2 in. long.
If you used 4 ply (fingering weight) yarn and 3.25mm needles for the foot part as well as the cuff, and followed the smallest size, they would knit up smaller

I love these and am just starting the first purl row in shaping instep. However I've just found it really difficult to knit after the first 9 stitches as they're on different needles. Any tips? It's the first time I've used circular needles for this type of thing. Many thanks suzy
I kept the 9 instep stitches on a double point needle and then put the other stitches on two separate pieces of yarn. Much easier to knit then keeping them on a needle. I also used double point needles instead of the circular.
hi, i really dont get it.... do you leave the bootee pinned it's quite restricting....also i'm a non circular knitter and even using needle and yarn for holding i'm in a mess.........
You can knit about 15 sts before the work gets difficult to work on so pull the thin plastic part of the circular need through and this will give you more movement also after working about three rows in the boot part of the pattern you can change to straight needles
I must be doing something wrong but I can't get the button holes right. After I cast off 2 stitches the yarn is on the wrong side of the hole to continue knitting. Any suggestions? I've never done button holes before.

I am assuming that you are doubling the four ply yarn to make it eight ply, Since it states up to 50 grams I am hoping that is the doubled yarn amount. As a fairly new knitter I hope I am not taking on more then I can chew, because I love these Baby Boots and I think my Grandson would look so cool in them this fall and winter. Have lots of time to get them completed.
The pattern call for 8 ply/double knit yarn. The reason a previous reader was talking about 4 ply was because she wanted to make them to fit a doll.
Does this mean that you are doubling the DK yarn to make an 8 ply or are you using one strand of DK yarn (which I thought was 4 ply) throughout the pattern?
One strand of double knit throughout. 4ply is a lighter weight yarn than double knit

I used Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk Double Knit - a bit expensive, but beautiful to work with!
And was the color Pebble?

An adult sized pattern would be great! I've made a few pairs for new babies and almost every mom has said they would wear them! Looking forward to the adult sized pattern too.

Looking at your blog was a HUGE help to me. The step where you connect past the button holes was very confusing. I am a beginning/intermediate knitter, and my biggest problem is filling in the blanks with patterns, so thanks for posting these extra instructions.
I love these little boots and just ordered the pattern but am confused about 2 things (so far):1) do i use 2 strands of DK yarn in the pattern (for 8 ply) or do i use1 strand of DK yarn (i thought that 1 strand was 4 ply)?2) I am knitting for a 3-6 mo. I do not understand how to construct the 2nd row: is it SL1, K1, P2, K2, P2 OR K2, P2 the entire rowthe comma before the brackets is confusing me.Thanks for you help!
nevermind. I figured this out.1) 1 strand of DK IS 8 ply2) the parenthesis in these directions are meaning the same as asterisks that I am use to seeing in other patterns.
