(6) Name: 'Knitting : Tomsocks

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit, purl, make one, yarnover.
  • slip stitches, pass slipped stitches over other stitches.
  • make short rows.

Pattern Description:

These socks came about because I was knitting socks for Tom; hence, Tomsocks! The pattern is fun to knit and garners compliments even while in progress. The stitch pattern has exciting effects on some variegated sock yarns--try it out!

Any sock- or fingering-weight yarn should work with this pattern.


8.25 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • size Medium (8" circumference)
  • size Large (9" circumference)
  • It's easy to modify the length of the foot, the calf, and the cuff.


  • 300-400 yards of sock yarn
  • Recommended yarn: Valley Yarns Franklin
  • size 1 knitting needles (or whatever size you need to get gauge). You can use one circular needle, two circular needles, or a set of double-pointed needles.

You Will Also Need:

  • One locking stitch marker to mark the start of the round.
  • A set of locking stitch markers if you choose japanese short rows.
  • Tapestry needle.
