Skill Level:

small skill level requirement Beginner

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Cast on
  • Knit and purl
  • Read and work from a stranded colorwork chart
  • Do basic increases and decreases
  • Work I-cord

Pattern Description:

This tam is a great introduction to stranded colorwork. Only two colors are used throughout and there are no long stretches of one color (so not long floats on the back). Use a self-striping yarn with long color repeats for a tam that looks a lot more complicated than it actually is!

28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stranded colorwork pattern on larger needles

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • To fit an average woman's head
  • Tam measures approximately 10 in./25.5 cm across the top after blocking

  • Light fingering weight yarn in two colors, approximately 150 yds./138 m of the main color and 120 yds./110 m of the contrast color
  • US 0/2.0 mm and US 2/2.75 mm needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

You Will Also Need:

  • One stitch marker
  • Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

I learned to knit from my aunt when I was about 7 years old, but it wasn't until 2005 that I got really serious about the sticks and string. I learned to spin in 2008 and began designing in 2011. Now my house is slowly being taken over by yarn and fiber.
