Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Provisional cast on, knitting in the round, stranded knitting, reading charts

Pattern Description:

Corvids are my favorite family of birds. Ravens, with their simple beauty and impressive intellect, are an especially rich source of mythology, including Odin's Hugin and Munin, Thought and Memory, of Norse mythos. They continue to inspire people today: they can be seen on postage stamps, as the mascots of football teams, and, obviously, on knitwear.

These mittens are knitted cuff up, in the round, with a hemmed cuff. These mittens are knit with fine yarn at a very dense gauge. The resulting fabric is relatively thick.

You can work with either black as the CC or MC for the hand portion. Both are pictured.

When customizing your size, or working to a different gauge, keep the following information in mind:
The cuff repeat is 5 sts, so cast on in multiples of 5.

The back of the hand, with the Raven motif, doesn't have any set repeat. Allocate enough stitches to it, including the 3 stitch border on either side, so that the stitch count for it plus the border stitches will equal or be close to the final stitch count on the palm including the thumb gusset stitches.

The palm of the hand repeat is 6 stitches; stitch count for the palm stitches should be in multiples of 6, plus 1.The stitch count for the thumb gusset, if changed, should also be in multiples of 6, plus 1.
