Nomad Earflap Hat Pattern

Gauge:

Different sizes achieved by varying the gauge:

Youth size gauge = 13 sts over 4" / 10cm
Average adult gauge = 12 sts over 4" / 10cm
Large adult gauge = 11 sts over 4" / 10cm

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

• Three different gauge suggestions given for achieving three different sizes: youth, average adult, large adult, with finished circumferences = 18 1/2" (20", 21 3/4") respectively.

Materials:

• Three different 3 1/2 oz / 100g balls of Dale of Norway Hubro pure new wool yarn, 72 yds / 66 m. See note below!
• Designer's note: Three hats were knit with 1 100g ball of each color, and obviously, you only use a little bit of each of the two accent colors. On the 4th hat, which was an adult average, I ran out of the main color doing the final trim around the bottom. Not a big deal - there was plenty of the contrasting colors left and either contrast color can look fine for the trim, too. But, if you're knitting either of the larger sizes and you'd like to have your bottom trim in the main color (off white, in this case), you MIGHT need a 2nd ball of the main color.

You Will Also Need:

• Needle suggestions: The one set of instructions works for 3 sizes - youth, adult average (shown) and adult large, provided you make minor gauge changes, as indicated in the pattern. The suggested needle sizes are US 11 (US 12, US 13) respectively.
• Designer's needle note: The hat can be knit using double-pointed needles, one long (32" / 80cm or longer) circular needle with the "magic loop" technique, or two circular needles of most any length. The sample hat was knit entirely on #11US/8mm needles. However, if you find your colorwork gauge is noticeably tighter than your solid stockinette gauge, use needles one size larger for your colorwork sections. If you find that your attached I-cord trim around the bottom is loose, use needles one size smaller for that trim.
