Pattern Description:

A knitter wrote to me, proclaiming that after she knit one of my Fair Isle / Norwegian patterns that featured a simple, symmetrical motif, without any shaping, she was officially "nuts" about stranded knitting and hoped I'd come up with a "next step" hat design. I answered her request with this Macadamia Hat, which has a unique motif, to advance her chart-reading skills a bit, yet simple shaping, separate from the chart work, to keep things easy.

Gauge:

Gauge: In stockinette stitch, with colorwork
Youth 20 stitches over 4" / 10cm
Adult 18 stitches over 4" / 10cm
XL Adult 16 stitches over 4" / 10cm

Finished circumference:
Youth = 17 1/2" / 44.7cm at gauge = 20 sts over 4" / 10cm
Adult = 19 1/2" / 49.7cm at gauge = 18 sts over 4" / 10cm
XL Adult = 22" / 55.9cm at gauge = 16 sts over 4"/ 10cm

Materials:

Two contrasting 50g / 13/4 oz balls of Dale of Norway "Hegre" 100% pure new wool yarn.
Youth sample: A = 1 ball of deep olive #8972; B = 1 ball of light sheep heather #2931.
Adult sample: A = 1 ball of cerulean #6054; B = 1 ball of light sheep heather #2931.

You Will Also Need:

Suggested needles:
Youth size: US #6 / 4.0mm for ribbing and US #7 / 4.5mm for main portion.
Adult size: US #7 / 4.5mm for ribbing and US #8 / 5.0mm for main portion.
XL Adult size: US #8 / 5.0mm for ribbing and US #9 / 5.5mm for main portion.
You can use a set of double-pointed needles, one long (32" or longer) circular needle with the "magic loop" technique, or two circular needles - whichever method you prefer.
