Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knitting in the round, yo, k2tog, k3tog, ssk, sssk, sk2p

Pattern Description:

Inspired by the lush imagery of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, the Greyhaven Hat and Cowl feature an arched, leafy stitch pattern worked seamlessly from the bottom up. These designs include both charted and written instructions with integrated shaping that creates a tapered cowl, in a choice of two sizes, and a soft, slouchy hat.

These patterns are also available separately as the Greyhaven hat and the Greyhaven Cowl.


20 sts = 4"/ 10 cm in blocked stockinette stitch
10 sts & 16 rows = 2"/ 5 cm in blocked pattern stitch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Cowl - Cozy (smaller size) and Slouchy (larger size)
  • Hat - 18"/ 45.5cm brim circumference to fit 20-22"/ 51-56cm average adult head size


  • US #5 3.75 circular needle
  • US #7 4.5 mm circular needle
  • US #7 4.5 mm double point needles
  • 155-330 yards worsted weight yarn

You Will Also Need:

  • Stitch marker
  • 10 Optional extra stitch markers to place between reps
  • Tapestry needle
