Basic Skills Necessary:

  • stranded colourwork/Fair Isle
  • chart reading

Pattern Description:

These stranded colourwork mittens have a Scandinavian thumb with gusset for a better fit, and a long, narrow cuff to fit inside your coat sleeves. (Directions for a shorter cuff are included.) The mittens are worked in the round from the cuff up, with the thumb stitches picked up and worked at the end. Use whichever method you prefer -- DPNs, Magic Loop, or 2 circular needles -- for working in the round. The pattern is charted only, with instructions for doing lifted increases and 2- stitch cables without a cable needle. It also includes a link to a video demonstrating the double start cast on used in the sample.


18 (16) sts = 2" in stranded colourwork in the round (Size is changed by altering gauge. For a good fit, you will need to do a gauge swatch)

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 7 (8)" hand circumference, measured around the base of the fingers


  • Quince & Co Tern (75% wool, 25% silk; 202m/221yds per 50g) MC (Boothbay Blue): 1 skein, CC (Oyster), 1 skein
  • 2.75mm/US2(for7"circ.)OR 3.25mm/US3 (for 8" circ.) or size needed to get correct gauge, DPNs/2 circulars/1 long circular (depending on preference for working in the round)

You Will Also Need:

  • 1 stitch marker
  • scrap yarn (approx. 13cm/5")
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
