Basic Skills Necessary:

  • You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit stitches, knit in a round, knit with two colors, knit two stitches together, and darn in ends of the finished work.

Pattern Description:

This double thickness, intarsia hat will keep your baby or toddler warm on the coldest Winter days. The bright spiral pattern pops against a black background. The rolled edging frames your child's face. I created this pattern to keep my daughter warm during our frequent trips to the Alps.


A 10 cm (4 inch) square, knit in stockinette stitch is 22 stitches and 24 rows.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • The hat is soft and stretchy, and can be knit in six sizes - newborn, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 12 months, 1 - 2 years, 2 - 3 years, 3 - 4 years.


  • One skein each black and brightly variegated aran weight, number 4 yarn, extra soft for baby's skin, natural fibers recommended Set of size 4 mm (US 6) short length circular knitting needles Set of size 4 mm (US 6) double pointed knitting needles Darning needle Scissors Stitch marker
