Pattern Description:

Inspired by the textiles of the Italian Renaissance, the Firenze mittens come in two sizes, with separate charts for each size. The mittens have a Scandinavian thumb and braiding on the cuffs, and are finished with a three-needle bind off. A matching cowl pattern is also available; both patterns can be made with 1x50g and 1x20g of each colour of the recommended yarn.


34 stitches and 39 rows = 4 inches in stranded colourwork

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • S: 7"/18cm circumference, 6.9"/17.5cm length from tip to base of hand
  • L: 8"/20cm circumference, 7.7"/19.5cm length


  • 3 stitch markers
  • scrap yarn for holding thumb stitches
  • yarn/tapestry needle to weave in ends
  • Needles: US2/2.75mm or size needed to get gauge, in preferred needle type for small circumference in the round

255 yards of Fingering weight

2 colours (123 yds of each), plus about 5 yds of a third colour for the braids
