To make the mitts, you'll need 250 yards/229m fingering weight yarn and one set of US #2/2.75mm dpns. To make the hat, you'll need 250 yards/229m fingering weight yarn, one 16-inch US #1/2.25mm 16-inch circular needle, one US #2/2.75mm 16-inch circular, and one set of US #2/2.75mm dpns.

The hat pattern provides instructions for knitting a women's size medium, which should fit heads measuring 20-25 inches/51-64 cm in circumference. For a smaller hat, go down a needle size and/or use a light fingering weight yarn. For a larger hat, go up a needle size and/or use sportweight or DK weight yarn.

The hat is worked in the round on a circular needle. Double-pointed needles (dpns) are used on the crown. Skills required include standard knitting techniques and stitches, as well as cabling with a cable needle. The stitch patterns are given in both written form and in charts. Explanations are given for all stitches.
