Fit:

Women

Item:

Mittens

Skill Level:

small skill level requirement Beginner

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit in the round
  • slip stiches
  • increases and decreases

Pattern Description:

A very warm pair of mittens, with a stitch pattern that's easy to do: the colour effect and texture are achieved solely by the use of slipped stitches, and knit and purl - definitely no stranded colour knitting necessary.

The mittens are knitted in the round. For the shaping, you will need to be familiar with the decreases k2tog, p2tog, ssk and ssp, and with the technique of grafting for the last few stitches. For size L a few stitches will be increased too, by making a stitch (or any other method you like to use).

Use any number of colours, in any sequence you like - why not use up all those bits of aran yarn leftover from other projects?

Gauge:

20sts, 28 rows = 10x10cm / 4x4" in stocking stitch
20sts, 44 rows = 10x10cm / 4x4" in pattern

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Women's XS/S [M, L], for inner circumference of mitten 18 [20, 22]cm / 7 1/8 [7 7/8, 8 5/8]"

Materials:

  • 1 skein (170m / 186 yards) each of at least 2 colours of an aran or worsted weight of yarn such as Rowan Pure Wool Aran (colours in pictures: #679 Ember, #681 Blood and #678 Honey)
  • 1 set of 4mm / US size 6 double pointed needles
  • Optional: 1 set of 3.5mm / US size 4 for cuff to get a snugger fit

I just love knitting gloves: once you get to the fingers there are so few stitches per round, that another finger is finished in what seems no time at all - giving you a constant sense of achievement!

My knitting patterns provide very detailed instructions. Apart from the very few designs in which the two gloves/mittens are knitted exactly identical, my patterns always include instructions for ...
