Pattern Description:

I stumbled across a new cast-on method I had never seen before...the Estonian cast on. It is used for sock knitting, but when knitted in thick yarn, it just makes such a pretty edge.
The pretty edge and bow make a nice embellishment for a very simple, rectangular hat.
You can wear it with the corners out like a cat hat, I like the corners tucked in. It is almost a triangular shape viewed from the back.
If you like to wear unusual clothing and accessories, this hat is for you,

The cowl also has the Estonian cast on and a simple yarn over pattern.
Both hat and cowl only use 2 skeins, and if you get the yarn with the Weekly Ad coupon from Michael's, you can make both for under $7.

Gauge:

11 sts and 16 rows = 4" with Charisma
9 sts and 12 rows = 4' with Hometown

If using a thicker yarn than Charisma (i.e. Hometown from Lion Brand), keep the 50 cast on stitches, do not increase.

  • hat size small to large
  • cowl 48" round x 7 1/2" wide

Materials:

  • 2 skeins for both hat and cowl of Loops and Threads Charisma (109 yds each)
  • size 13 circular needle 16" long for hat, 36" long for cowl
  • 1 skein Lion Brand Hometown for hat

You Will Also Need:

  • tapestry needle
  • stitch markers
