Pattern Description:

This fun hat is accented by a two color braided brim and features large colorblock panels that provide an easy introduction to intarsia. The back and forth of the colors in the brim reminded me of an M.C. Escher drawing, thus the name. Use neutral colors to keep the "Escher" look, or brighten it up with bolder color combinations. Skills required beyond knit and purl include basic cabling (charted instructions) and decreasing. Hat is worked flat and seamed.

Gauge:

The differences in sizing are achieved by changing the gauge and yarn weight used, be sure to note the correct gauge for your size below. Note that there are two gauges given for each size. For the first gauge (on smaller needles), it is most important to get the correct row gauge. For the second gauge (on larger needles), it is most important to get the correct stitch gauge. All gauges are for a 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) area, knit in stockinette stitch.

Gauges are given as: smaller needles, larger needles
Child: 28 sts x 36 rows, 22 sts x 36 rows
Adult S/M: 26 sts x 32 rows, 20 sts x 32 rows
Adult M/L: 22 sts x 30 rows, 19 sts x 30 rows

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

18 (20, 21)", 45 (50, 53) cm finished circumference

Materials:

Each hat uses a different weight of yarn, a wool or wool blend is suggested. Each size requires 115 yards each of colors A and B. Suggested yarn weights for each size are:
Child: Heavy fingering or sport weight yarn (180-190 yards/165-173 meters per 50g), and Size 3 US (3.25 mm) and size 4 US (3.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
Adult S/M: Sport or DK weight yarn (140-150 yards/128-137 meters per 50g), and Size 4 US (3.5 mm) and size 5 US (4.0 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
Adult M/L: DK or light worsted yarn, (125-135 yards/114-123 meters per 50g), and Size 5 US (3.75 mm) and size 6 US (4.25 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
