Pattern Description:

Dragonflies symbolize the illusion of light, thoughts and dreams in this knitted interpretation featuring lace, beads and Estonian gathered stitches.

This design combines lace eyelets, beads, decrease stitch outlines, gathered stitches, stockinette and garter stitch to provide the details of the dragonflies against a ground of reverse stockinette. The dreamy reflection of light and shadow is framed with columns of small beads and gathered stitches.

Construction: knitted flat in one piece from end to end

Beading Techniques: the larger beads are placed with a crochet hook; the smaller beads are pre-strung and pushed into place between purl stitches


6 stitches and 6 rows per inch over lace stitch patterns after blocking (plan for 51?2 stitches and 7 rows over unblocked stockinette stitch)

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 52" by 8.5"


  • Yarn: 330 yards lace or light fingering weight
  • Glass Seed Beads: 168 size 6/0 (4 mm diameter) for dragonfly body and head, approximately 15 g
  • Glass Seed Beads: 1240 size 8/0 (3 mm diameter) for dragonfly wings and scarf border, approximately 35 g
  • Knitting Needles: Size US 4 (3.5 mm) suggested

You Will Also Need:

  • Stitch markers (optional, but helpful in checking stitch counts)
  • Small crochet hook or similar for placing the larger size 6/0 beads
  • Beading needle, floss threader, or bead spinner for stringing the smaller size 8/0 beads
  • Tapestry needle for finishing ends
  • Blocking board; rust-proof blocking wires/pins
