Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit and purl
  • do directional increases (m1R and m1L)
  • do a provisional cast on
  • pick up stitches along a garter edge
  • do a provisional cast on (any method)

Pattern Description:

Designed to show off the beauty of a hand-dyed yarn, Diminishing Returns uses alternating sections of stockinette and garter to add texture to a great dye job.

This shawl is worked from the top down, starting with a garter tab.

Although the sample was worked using two skeins of the same color, this pattern could easily be modified to use two different colors.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited.


22 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • One size, approximately 56 in./142 cm wide at top edge and 28.5 in./73 cm deep at center spine


  • 800-820 yds. (732-750 m) of fingering weight yarn
  • US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

You Will Also Need:

  • four stitch markers
  • yarn needle
