Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knitting in the round
  • provisional cast on
  • stitches used: knit, purl

Pattern Description:

Every fall and winter wardrobe needs a big squishy knitted cowl. This one has texture, softness, and can be worn many ways. It is reversible, with a different pattern on each side. Show off one side or the other, or both at the same time. Wrap it once or twice. The Boxy Cowl is worked in the round with aran or worsted weight yarn. A provisional cast on is used to create matching top and bottom edges.


13 sts and 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stitch pattern worked in the rnd after blocking.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • one size


  • Malabrigo Twist (100% baby merino wool; 150 yd [137 m]/3.53 oz [100 g]). 2 skeins. Shown in #076 Manzanilla Olive.
  • US size 9 [5.5 mm] 32" [80 cm] circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge.

You Will Also Need:

  • marker
  • tapestry needle
  • waste yarn

Suggested yarn:

300 yards of Worsted weight
