Pattern Description:

Birmingham England was famous in the late 18th & the 19th centuries for their meticulous manufacturing of buckles, snuffboxes, chatelaines, watches, watch seals, jewelry, and especially of buttons. A Birmingham button meant a button of beauty and quality, So it seemed a natural name for a cabled cowl that lets you show off your button collection. Don't have a button collection? What a great excuse to start one!

With 3 sizes, and lots of ways to make this this cowl uniquely yours, add a few buttons to your wardrobe with the Birmingham Buttons cowl


About 25 sts & 32 rows in cable pattern. Differences in gauge will impact the finished size of the neckwarmer and the yardage used, but are not crucial to fit

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Small (6"x20"), Medium (6"x22), Large (6"x24)


  • 150 (175, 200) yards worsted weight yarn
  • US 6/4mm needles

You Will Also Need:

  • cable needle if you use one to cable
  • tapestry needle
  • buttons about 3/4" (to button the cowl)
  • up to 23 (26, 29) buttons each about 1/2 -3/4 inches for decoration
