I think it means if it is a knit appearing stitch, knit - if it apears to be a purl stitch, purl

When I seen this pattern the first thought was how can I make this into an afghan.... It is just what I have been looking for

It sounds to me like knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. So if the stitch is smooth knit it. If it is a bump then purl it.
