Swirl wire links

from Martine Callaghan
(5) Name: 'Jewelry : Swirl wire links
Swirl wire links Add a touch of elegance to earrings
Swirl wire links Links used as dangles
Swirl wire links Links for a necklace

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Make a loop
  • Form wire on a mandrel

Pattern Description:

These strong elegant links are particularly useful for showcasing unusual or particularly attractive large beads such as lampwork beads, felt beads or gemstone nuggets.

Although based on the open spiral technique, the use of a mandrel as the base ensures that the links are consistent in size.

As usual, it is important that links should be strong and the wire gauge suggested here is ideal for beginners but it's the minimum size that should be used. I also recommend the use of 1/2 hard wire to avoid distortion.

  • Per link 8cm 0.8mm/3" 20 gauge half hard wire

  • Flat nose pliers
  • Chain or bent nose pliers
