Pattern Description:

Temari are the most beautiful and addictive things you are ever likely to make!

They have been made in Japan for over 1000 years - and in China before that. Basically, Temari are solid spheres, which can be created in a variety of ways and are then embroidered in a very specific method to make incredible and complex-looking designs.

I've been making Temari since I first discovered them back in 1995 and have never either come to the end of the possible designs, or become bored by them, as there's such a vast variety of patterns.

This tutorial will lead you through the steps needed to achieve a lovely design called Diamond Flower, which is worked on a Complex-8 base, instructions for which are not included in this tutorial, but can be obtained from my pattern shop.

I love this design as it looks so complicated but is really easy to stitch, even if you don't have much Temari experience yet. Don't let the instructions for adding extra guide lines frighten you - it's not nearly as hard as it looks!

All of my tutorials are based on original, traditional Japanese designs and print out in handy A5 sized booklets. The names of the designs are direct translations from the Japanese. Each tutorial contains a materials list, comprehensive, step-by-step written instructions and clear diagrams.

My tutorials also come with unlimited email support. If you get stuck while stitching your Temari, just email me and I'll help you out.

Materials:

  • Wrapped polystyrene ball marked with a C8 division
  • 3 colours of Perle 5 thread
  • Pins
  • Long, stiff needle
