A friend in Norway who is an EMS tech asked me to design a pattern for a crocheted elephant, so that she could make them to give sick and injured children. I didn't think that I could do it, but with much trial and error, I think I have a cute little elephant design.
The pattern contains instructions to make Elly, the Amigurumi Baby Elephant. Elly is crocheted from sport weight yarn (you could use DK) with a size 0 (3.25mm), and has plastic safety eyes. Of course you can use any thread or yarn with the appropriate size hook, just make sure that you adjust the size of the eyes to the size of the elephant.
Elly is about 6.5 inches (16.5cm) tall and 6 inches (15cm) long, not including her trunk. The legs can be either thread-jointed for movement possiblities, or sewn on. Elly would make a wonderful gift for children!
Instructions for making Elly's pretty red flower are included. The booklet is 18 pages long, and includes many color photos of the finished elephant, as well as instructional photos to help you along the way.
Materials and Supplies:
Sport Weight or DK Weight Yarn, Soft White, Off White, or Ivory - 165 yds, Pink - 35 yds, Red - 10 yds, Yellow - 5 yds, Green - 5 yds
Size C (2.75mm) Crochet Hook
Two 8mm snap-on plastic eyes
20" (51cm) length of black embroidery thread
Large Tapestry Needle, 5" (13cn) Doll Needle (only if thread jointing), and 2" (5cm) Sewing Needle
Upholstery or other strong thread that will not stretch (if thread jointing)
Scissors
Light blue pencil or eye shadow for shading eyes
Pink pencil or blush makeup for shading cheeks
Fine point black marker for lining eyelids
Gage is not important, but I recommend making all 4 legs in one sitting.
165 yards of Sport weight

I am passionate about crochet. I enjoy knitting too, but it goes much slower than crochet, and I prefer instant gratification! Actually, I don’t think I've ever met a craft that I didn’t like, from cross-stitch to folk painting to jewelry making, but I always come back to crochet.

I'm a southern girl - born in Alabama and raised on 3 continents. Daughter and wife of military men, I've lived in Morocco, Taiwan, Germany, and South Korea. I currently live in the Texas Hill Country with my much loved DH and two miniature schnauzers, Max and Beau. Retired from Federal Service, I can now crochet to my heart's content!
