Basic Skills Necessary:

  • You should already know how to ch, sl st, sc, hdc, and dc.
  • Explanations are given to create the various shading effects in the filet crochet.

Pattern Description:

This valance is an absolute must for your favorite fly fisherman. It features a life-size rainbow trout rising out of the water to catch a perfectly-placed fly. The rod pocket is built into the design so the curtain rod can be woven in and out at the top. There is a repeat in the rock pattern so the valance can be expanded to your desired size.

This is a great project for the intermediate crocheter. In addition to detailed instructions, a graph is also provided for reference. This filet crochet valance is worked from side to side.

The pattern is writen in U.S. terms.


Working in pattern:
10 blocks/spaces = 3-1/2"
11 rows = 3-1/2"

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • The finished size is 51" wide x 18-1/4" - 22" long. Instructions are included to increase the width in 10-1/4" increments.


  • Crochet cotton, size 10, in 350 yd. (320 m) balls - dark green (4 balls)
  • Size 8 (1.50 mm) steel crochet hook
