These wall hangings are created with a unique combination of Thread Painting and Tapestry Crochet to produce the effect of a silhouette against a sunset.

Thread Painting is a way of changing colours to produce a shaded effect. It is usually worked with 3 strands of thread or yarn, using all 3 strands together. As you work, you change one strand for the next colour every few rows. This produces the effect of one colour shading into the next instead of the abrupt change usually created by colour changing. This technique can be used with almost any form of crochet.

Tapestry Crochet is similar to regular crochet, except that two or more strands are worked at the same time to create a colourful fabric. The stitches are worked as you would normally, through both loops. The strands not being used to create the current stitches are carried along the top of the previous row and worked over. The tension is kept tight and, if done correctly, you should not be able to see the carried threads beneath the stitches. The finished pieces of work look almost woven instead of crocheted. Tapestry Crochet is traditionally worked in the round so you do not see the back of the stitches.
