Crochet edgings can be added to many items used in the home. I have added these edgings to tray cloths, coasters, placemats, food covers, jug covers and handkerchiefs. I particularly like making coasters, sewing 4 or 6 squares in matching fabrics and adding the crochet border. They make fabulous gifts.
Personalising a handkerchief with an edging makes a truly unique gift. You can use new hankies, vintage hankies, plain or patterned. Coloured edgings brighten up plain hankies and on patterned hankies the edgings can contrast with the pattern, match or blend with one or more colours on the pattern or be simple white. The variations you can have are limitless.
This pattern shows you how to add edgings to hankies and gives instructions for six different edgings. The pattern is the same for other items, just choose the item and follow the instructions.
Once you have made one and are confident with your crochet, you could design your own edging.
You will need 4 ply/fingering weight cotton yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook (US C/2)

Like many I took a couple of decades off my knitting and crochet whilst my working life took over, but now I am catching up. I always have a hook or pair of needles close by; my fingers do not like to rest. After reacquainting myself with my old hobbies, I progresed to creating my own designs. It seemed a natural progression for me, as did running crochet workshops in the NW of England.
Those who have tried my designs will know that I love creating simple designs that look very effective, after all life doesn't need to be complicated! And I understand that many people like a bit of television or music knitting/crochet, so the easier they are the better it is to enjoy the world around you whilst enjoying your craft.
