Pattern Description:

Cippikaḷ is "cockle shell" in Tamil".
The cockle shell is the commonest, loveliest shell one can always find at the beach and it's probably been the
inspiration for innumerable 'shelled creations' in craft.

The project is worked sideways. It starts as a seemingly 'straight' pattern, and after a few rows, starts to 'move' diagonally, with one flat (non-increase) edge, and one 'diagonal' (increase) edge.
The finish has two options. You can just end off with a diagonal edge, or mimic the start edge.

This pattern has been tested using :
1. 3-ply acrylic (light fingering) 85g / 485 yds ; 4 mm (G) crochet hook ;
2. Lion Brand : Sock-Ease, (438 yds/100 g) used : 398.5 yds , 4.25 mm (G) crochet hook ,
Skill level by tester: Intermediate
Comments : If I could have completed in one sitting, it took about 4.5 hours ;
3. Regia Lace (doubled up) ; 4.5 mm crochet hook,
Skill level by tester: Advanced beginner? I don't think there's anything TOO difficult for anyone in it!
Comment : Everything was explained very well ;
4.3-ply unbranded acrylic, 60 g - 342 yds , 4 mm (G) crochet hook,
Skill level : Advanced beginner
Comment: Very clear instructions, took about 4 hrs ,
5.Mosaic Moon MCN Sock , 408.9 yds , G crochet hook,
Skill level : Advanced beginner ,
Comment : Took about 10 hrs, photos helpful, instructions clear.
6.Premier Yarns Serenity Garden, 2 skeins and a bit, about 151g , 5 mm (H) crochet hook ,
Skill level by tester :Advanced beginner ,
Comment : Instructions were very clear and easy to follow

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical, but the designer obtained a guage of 1 stitches and 1 row = 1 inch.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 6" x 50"

Materials:

  • 4 mm (G) crochet hook
  • 3-ply acrylic (light fingering, #1) yarn ; 350 - 450 yds

Suggested yarn:

450 yards of Fingering weight
