Use the petite adjustment to remove side-seam wrinkles. Raise shoulders for perfect seam placement and jacket sleeves for a better fit through the arms. Take in side seams, center-back and princess seams for a better fit and a slenderizing look. Hem lined jackets from the bottom for the length you want. Lesson plan

Lesson 1. Altering Jackets

  • Meet your instructor, Angela Wolf, and learn more about the tailoring skills covered in your class. If you're looking to go into the alterations business, Angela offers tips throughout.

Lesson 2. Inside the Jacket

  • Angela demonstrates how to get at the interior of your jacket without removing the lining as she gives you a tour of jacket features. Then jump right into altering a boxy jacket into a more fitted garment, making adjustments for petite figures and taking in princess seams.

Lesson 3. Jacket Fitting

  • What can and cannot be altered? It depends on the fabric and cut of the jacket. Angela shows you some examples, then walks you through the standard alterations on a jacket that is too big.

Lesson 4. Raising Jacket Shoulders

  • As jacket sizes increase, the shoulders get larger, too often unnecessarily. Learn how to raise the shoulders on a too-large jacket or an '80s relic for a custom, contemporary fit.

Lesson 5. Hemming a Jacket Sleeve

  • Don't let sleeves scare you! If you can't hem a sleeve cuff because of buttons or other design details, you'll have to shorten at the shoulder. Angela demystifies the process with step-by-step instruction.

Lesson 6. Hemming a Lined Jacket

  • You can hem a fully lined jacket without fuss by following along with Angela. You'll mark your stitch lines, make a template of the front curves, add interfacing and resew, then turn your jacket right-side-out for the big voilà!

"Highly recommended for medium to experienced sewers, and as a follow-up of Angela's previous classes, which I haven't taken yet. A great course if you're into repurposing old garments and reinventing or personalizing those unique thrift shop or rare discount-aisle finds! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this course (...) The sections on hemming from the shoulder and all of Angela's shortcuts for making custom pattern sections where you would want to recreate a specific curve (or angle) were invaluable to me! "
