Joining Crochet Motifs

with Edie Eckman
Joining Crochet Motifs
Everybody loves to crochet granny squares. Nobody likes to sew them together! Edie Eckman solves the problem with 11 elegant joining techniques.

Conquer that stack of crocheted motifs and turn them into a beautiful finished project! Edie Eckman shows you creative ways to join granny squares, hexagons and other shapes with smooth seams and corners that don't pucker. You'll learn 11 different crocheted connections, including four join-as-you-go techniques, so when you're done, you're done! Use a crochet hook or yarn needle to make the joins invisible or work them in a contrasting color for design interest. Lacy filler and edge stitches add airiness to your project, and the ingenious Continuous Final Round lets you seam up your whole design with one piece of yarn. Add lots of new techniques to your crochet bag of tricks, with help from the author of The Crochet Answer Book. Plus, Edie's blanket pattern, featuring six pretty square variations, is included free!

Lesson plan

Lesson 1. Introduction

  • Joining crocheted pieces can be fun. Get started with an overview of the invisible tapestry needle join, weaving in ends, and how to read square and section diagrams.

Lesson 2. Simple Seams

  • Simple, quick-to-learn seams are demonstrated, including the whipstitch, slipstitch seams and corners, and single-crochet seams and corners.

Lesson 3. Combination Seams

  • Learn a couple of combination seams: single-crochet chain combinations, and double-crochet, two together seams.

Lesson 4. The Join-As-You-Go Techniques

  • Save time and eliminate those growing piles of squares by joining them as you go. You'll learn three techniques: slip stitch, single crochet and flat JAYGo methods.

Lesson 5. The JAYGo Hybrid

  • Edie's ingenious JAYGo hybrid allows you to join as you go, while keeping your project small and portable.

Lesson 6. The Continuous Final Round

  • Another ingenious technique, the Continuous Final Round, lets you seam up your whole blanket project with a single piece of yarn. Edie also shows you some variations.

Lesson 7. Adding Fillers

  • Filler stitches add texture, airiness and an extra design element to your project. You'll learn how to work lacy fillers between clusters of squares.

Lesson 8. Putting It All Together

  • Seams can be pretty as well as practical. Edie shows you the finishing touches for your crocheted blanket project, including blocking, seaming and working the corners.

Lesson 9. Bonus: Joining Motifs of Other Shapes

  • How do you join motifs that aren't square? Edie shows you how to work with hexagons, circles, triangles and other free-form motifs.

"Thoroughly enjoyed this class! I've been making simple granny squares a long time, but this class still had lots to teach me. In addition to the 11 or 12 joining techniques (many of which were new to me), I also improved in my chart reading, and invisible joins. Also learned a stitch, 'standing double crochet,' which I really like the look of and will enjoy using more. Just added Edie Eckman's new motif book to my wish list."
