Big Techniques from Small Scraps

Big Techniques from Small Scraps
Sarah Fielke makes six scrappy quilts that combine traditional techniques with fresh design and updated fabrics.

Playful, colorful, improvisational and just plain fun! That's how Sarah Fielke's fans describe her quilt designs. In Big Techniques from Small Scraps, this Aussie quilter makes six small, scrappy quilts. Try something different, like deconstructed piecing, or learn a new skill, like needleturn appliqué. Create Sarah's designs or jump off and do them your own way. It's all good fun!

Lesson plan

Lesson 1. Introduction

  • Meet Sarah Fielke, fabric and quilt designer and author of Quilting: From Little Things and Hand Quilted With Love.

Lesson 2. Step-Down Piecing

  • Step-down piecing allows you to work in diagonal steps rather than in horizontal rows. These quilts can be scrappy or coordinated and done with plain squares or pieced blocks.

Lesson 3. Needleturn Applique Technique 1

  • Take the hard work out of hand appliqué with Sarah's needleturn techniques, including easy ways to mark, make circles and create bias tape.

Lesson 4. Needleturn Applique Technique 2

  • Continue with needleturn appliqué by applying your shapes to the quilt surface. Sarah shows you easy techniques for appliquéd curves and points.

Lesson 5. Deconstructed Piecing 1

  • Deconstructed piecing is fun! Throw away your rulers and your preconceived notions and quilt freehand and improvisationally.

Lesson 6. Deconstructed Piecing 2

  • Even more deconstructed piecing fun! You'll create Dolly and the flowers in her garden, then assemble the whole design.

Lesson 7. Free Curves

  • Make curves without templates or pins while creating a deconstructed version of the classic New York Beauty block.

Lesson 8. 60-Degree Ruler Design Possibilities

  • The 60-degree ruler is one of Sarah's favorite tools. In this lesson you'll see why, as she shows lots of interesting things to do, including equilateral triangles, diamonds and stars.

Lesson 9. 60-Degree Ruler: Stars in Print

  • You'll love this quilt design, which features lots of different shapes that use the 60-degree ruler. Sarah chooses contemporary fabrics, but this design lends itself to traditional prints and solids as well.

Lesson 10. Wedge Ruler

  • The wedge ruler gives you more angles and options to try, from tumblers and wagon wheels to thimbles and stripes! Make the Spring Garden design in a Dresden plate style with a fussy-cut circle at the center.

"I love this class and love Sarah's teaching style. I really enjoyed all the techniques in this class, especially learning needle-turn appliqué (which Sarah explains and demonstrates in an easy-to-understand way) and sewing freestyle curves without pins!! Genius."
