Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit Jacket

Enjoy your class as many times as you want, whenever you want. Your access never expires.

Learn it...

Why, hello there! If you enjoyed Sew Retro: The Perfect Bombshell Dress, or you follow my blog, Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing, I know you'll adore my second Craftsy class, Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit Jacket.

The menswear look was everywhere in the 1940s, thanks to wartime rationing (girls tailored their fellows' suits to fit themselves) and those snappy uniforms the WACs and WAVEs wore. Whether you're a sewist ready to learn new tricks, a fan of vintage fashion or a woman who needs a skirted suit for work each day - or all three - you'll love this class.

I designed the included suit pattern exclusively for Craftsy - a flattering cut with princess seams and a flared waist, in sizes 0 to 24. As we cut and sew the jacket, I'll show you different construction methods, depending on your level of sewing expertise. If you're up for a challenge, you'll learn how to construct a pad-stitched collar and lapel, welt pockets and bound buttonholes. If you don't have time for couture techniques, I show you how to achieve great results with fusible interfacing and machine buttonholes. Either way, you'll finish with a stunning outfit you can dress up or down, and you're guaranteed never to run into yourself on Fifth Avenue or anywhere else.

Like all Craftsy courses, Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit comes with a 100 percent money-back guarantee and is available day and night, whenever you feel the inclination. Your access never expires, so you can come back for a chat the next time you need a chic little number for a flight to Europe or your next Hollywood premiere. Join the fun and sign up for Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit today!

Excellent Sew Retro, Sew Fun  May 16, 2012

I really enjoyed taking this class, and love my finished project. Gretchen is a supurb teacher and each segment of the class was very informative, and easy to learn. The pattern that is included is really well drafted, and fits me perfectly. Can't wait to take the next class offered by Gretchen and Craftsy!

Good Good enough, but not the best!  May 16, 2012

I took this class with the hopes of creating a suit that I could wear to work. Goal accomplished. I think that Gretchen is a great resource and has a lot of knowledge to give. The technique for setting in sleeves with a bias strip was ingenious and I am no longer afraid of sleeves!!!
However, where this class seemed to lack was in polished finished product that I expect from Craftsy. I took the other Sew Retro class and was amazed at how thorough and flawless everything was. Each ...

Excellent Great Fun  May 15, 2012

Great class. So enjoyable and you managed to de-mystify so much, making things look so much easier than I originally though.

Good Harry Potter and the Jacket Snitch  May 14, 2012

drofnras

Will the tricky technique work or not? Will the couture side grab the snitch or will it be the machine side? This course, although taught by someone who knows how to sew, is a little improvisational - and this should not be the case for 'serious' sewing like a jacket. Fifty-odd pages of pattern print outs is also daunting. It's fun to watch but I am not sure I would get the same result. It's more like practice time before the big game (so, wands out!)

I really enjoy Gertie as a teacher she is an excellent teacher. I learned so much doing this jacket and brushed up on long forgotten tailoring techniques. The stitches she taught for going around a graded collar is something I had never done and now use all the time. Thanks Gertie I hope you do another class someday soon I would love to take it.

Average Love the jacket, but need feedback from the teacher for technical points  May 5, 2012

I love this jacket. I am an experienced sewer but have not done a tailored jacket in a very long time and never one with hand tailoring. There were several times when the video was not clear and I needed more technical advice but the teacher never answered questions. I e-mailed craftsy and they said she would be answering questions soon but still two weeks later I have unanswered questions. So I love this format but will not be taking another class with Gretchen unfortunately.

Great class! I am a novice sewer and Gertie is such an excellent teacher, it looks like I have been sewing my entire life. I love her attention to detail and that she gives us so many options. My mom cannot believe how much I have learned in so short a time. . . all thanks to Craftsy. Please please get Gertie to teach another project.
Thanks Gertie and thanks Craftsy.
