A note from Ann Peteresen, instructor of Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine

Finishing a large quilt doesn't have to be a big chore. Learn how to do it on your home machine with the easy techniques I teach in my Craftsy online class Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine. Learn five different methods for handling and finishing a large quilt yourself (and maybe even save money in the process). My class is perfect for quilters of every ability level. Basic quilters will find it helpful and easy to follow, while more advanced quilters are sure to pick up new tips and tricks from the techniques they learn.

What you will learn in Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine

  • How to easily and beautifully create a quilt as large as king size.
  • How to split the batting or the top of a quilt to make it more manageable.
  • How to begin a quilt by adding borders around a central medallion.
  • How to assemble individually quilted blocks.
  • How to support and wrangle a large sandwiched quilt under your machine.
  • How to add more methods to your repertoire of finishing techniques.
  • How to hone your machine quilting and free motion skills.

Ann L. Petersen took up quilting more than 20 years ago, and quickly discovered that teaching the art and craft of quilting is her favorite thing. As a designer for the Great American Quilt Factory and its book imprint, Possibilities, Ann learned many techniques she would never have attempted, including the large-quilt strategies she shares with Craftsy. In 2012, Ann's quilt "Basket Case Flowers" will hang in the National Quilt Museum as a selection in the museum's annual contest, "New Quilts from an Old Favorite." Ann lives in Surprise, Arizona and blogs at obsessivequilter.weebly.com.

Excellent Excellent help for quilting any size on a small machine.  May 16, 2012

De Anna

I have watched this video twice and can see it will be one of my favorites. I have a small machine and love making lap quilts and wall hangings because they are small projects. I cannot afford to have my quilts done by someone else. This video has given my sewing new life and me new hope. Thanks so much for this technique. I really enjoyed her teaching style.

I would really like to thank you for being such a clear and concise teacher that I feel enabled to manage to quilt to an acceptable standard. It is the detail that you explain and the clear instructions that you give that make this possible. Please keep up the classes. Whopsy

Excellent Quilting with Ann on a small machine  May 16, 2012

Ann I can't thank you enough for this class. I was stuck with a growing number of quilt tops left unquilted because I was so unsure as to how to go about it on a small machine. I have since started quilting these tops and have completed 3! I have picked up so many helpful tips. I was so unsure of spray basting but now only spray baste and love it. It is so much better than having to pin. Your classes are easy to understand and I love the fact that I can keep going back to check on points or ...

Average Picked up on a few thing  May 16, 2012

I did pick up a few things I never thought of and didn't know. I had used the spray bond to sandwich a quilt in the past and was not impressed. Learned that I probably over sprayed. Did not know that you could spray fold, then put together, and not have to use so much. Tho not sure I want to use this method again. Picked up on, what seems to be, shortcuts when you begin the actual quilting process on the machine, of securing quilt while sewing.

Excellent I'm Here  May 16, 2012

I never get lonesome for you because I can log on whenever I feel like it but you don't know I'm here. So I wanted to let you know that I really, really like your class. You never get impatient and you have such a sweet, soothing way of explaining things. I'm making progress, albeit slowly. I did ask a question and loved your answer. Thank you, thank you thank you. I'm finally learning to quilt big quilts on my small machine after many failed attempts following reading books and attending ...

I like the classes, and can't believe how fast my question was answered! I like that Ann takes us slowly through the preparation process. She shows us how to do it!

this has been a great class! Such a great instructor, very clear and helpful tips. I quilt with a group from my church, making quilts to send to the pediatric oncology patients at the nearby hospital. One in our group has a long arm, and we tie some as well...now I feel I can tackle some of the quilting, thanks to your class and this awesome platform! I even bought a new machine and can't wait to get my first quilt machine quilted! Thanks Ann!
