I started decorating in 2001 after taking a local Wilton class. I took the class for pure enjoyment with no other thought except to make cakes for my kids. Then one evening I got a phone call asking if I would be interested in teaching the local classes for Wilton - I hadn't even applied for a job - but I thought it might be fun to do one night a week, so I said "sure". Little did I know that my one night a week would quickly grow to five nights a week with some days teaching 2 or 3 classes a day. I had fun and "Lisa's Cakes" was born. I taught for five years before quitting because the demand for wedding cakes kept me too busy. At first, I kept Lisa's Cakes strictly wedding cakes - no birthday/party cakes. I had some years where I did between 60 - 70 weddings/year and I just didn't have the time or energy for anything else. As I do this out of my home and work by myself - doing everything from maintaining my website to answering emails to meeting customers to baking to decorating... - I've often thought about opening a store front and hiring help but am getting to the age that I want to retire - not work more! :) I have since slowed the wedding end down (I'm so tired of transporting and lifting these cakes by myself!!) and have opened up the party cake end of my business. While the money isn't as well as I get paid for a wedding cake, I have to say these kind of cakes are a lot of fun and not near as stressful! Found this site last fall and have enjoyed taking several classes and would recommend this site to everyone. Happy Decorating! Lisa
