Until I was expecting my firstborn (now 16) I had never seen or read a crochet pattern or how to make any other stitch. I just experimented until things looked how I wanted them to. Then I bought my first pattern and a skein of wool and started my first pattern. I stood at the haberdashery counter for hours till the assistant had shown me how to follow the pattern.
Since then I've made lots of blankets for the babies in my life and gradually learned new stitches. I make more than blankets these days as my obsession has grown and now I'm rarely without a project to hand (i especially love making bootees) A new baby has made making time for crochet a little more challenging but I keep a simple project on the go that I can dip in and out of at any time. Usually a blanket, just like my nan used to make :) I feel my crochet keeps a little bit of her alive.
I love teaching others to crochet and then watching them fall under the spell of hooking up little bits of wooly loveliness :)
My yarn stash is huge and continues to grow. I think it is an addiction!
