About three years ago I decided to start a lunch group at work as a team building exercise. The group decided together that we would meet once a month (it became much more frequent) and work on some craft project during our lunch hour. We tried some beaded jewelry and then as a group decided we should figure out how to knit. We started with looms and move on from there. Two of us knit and crochet daily now. Although we all work in different departments, we still call each other to discuss projects in progress.
Currently, I am the organizer/teacher of a group of people that meet at the local coffee house to knit, crochet, cross stitch or whatever. The group is growing rapidly. :)
I am working on developing a club for pre-service teachers and organizing opportunities for this group to work with youth organizations to teach them various crafting skills. If you can teach a child to knit, you can teach them math. :)
