My mom and grandmothers always encouraged art and crafts. They are all crafters themselves sewing, knitting, mosaic work, painting, etc. As a kid my favorite gifts where new crayons, paints and especially loved it when my grandma gave me the old copy of the JC Penny's catalog to cut up for collaging.
