I was surrounded by women who did some sort of needlecraft; my mom sews, knits, and crochets, my Grandma was a seamstress and my other Gramma was a prolific crocheter and knitter. They all taught us girls how to do the basics and we went from there. The funny thing is none of them quilted, so for my first quilt I was on my own and I made so many mistakes that looking back it's funny. The best one was after I finished the top my mom told me to sandwich it by sewing it right sides together with the backing (batting layered in there) and then turned it right sides out. Quilted it after, so funny. It basically worked. Years later, I took it apart (yes, I picked out all the quilting) and re-made it the correct way. It looks much better and my family and I love snuggling in that quilt.
