When I have only a few minutes to sew, I grab something delightful to whip up such as these zippered pouches.

A great way to use smaller pieces of fabric....no waste.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Use what fabric scraps are on hand, no matter whether they match or not. Add an outrageous colored zipper and enjoy the whimsey of it all.
