What was your inspiration?
Wool nappy covers are incredibly expensive ($30-80 each!). Many of the wool jumpers were damaged and free, the elastic is under $2/metre, snaps are about 5c each, and the snap press was $20 (and I've used it so much!), so I got 10 nappy covers for about $60 total plus my time. I had intended to make longies from the sleeves, but I ran out of time.
What are you most proud of?
My adorable munchkin, of course!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
1. Felt the jumpers thoroughly before cutting out - run them through the washing machine with the hottest possible water. You may need to do this twice. Choose the jumpers that don't feel stiff or too thick when dry.
2. After sewing, make the covers water resistant by soaking in warm water with pure lanolin (dissolve in boiling water with a little baby wash first) - you should lanolise and dry 3 times before first use. They will feel a little sticky at first - don't worry, the lanolin is good for your hands and will mostly work its way into the fibres as it is worn on a warm body.
