What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be afraid to apply your Craftsy-learned knowledge to other projects. The lessons and techniques taught in Cake-osaurus Rex are applicable to a wide range of sculpted cake projects, including this Deer groom's cake. The same structural components used for Cake-osaurus Rex were used in the deer's neck and head to insure stability.

Hi Catherine! I loved your class and learned so much!! I would advise everyone who wants to learn the process to take Catherine class! I do have a couple questions! Did you use the same process for mounting the bottom portion (chest front torso area) like you did in the class for the mounting& what did you do (use) or cover with to insert the antlers into the head? Did you use the same technique that you used in class? I hope this makes sense! I would love to try and make a deer for my father. Thanks Again

Thanks so much, I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the class! Please write a review so other craftsy cakers can read about it! This deer cake is very similar to the Cake-osaurus. The torso is mounted to the board in the same way as in the tutorial. The head here is styrofoam because the client wanted to be able to keep it. I don't want to know what they did with it, haha! The antlers are made in the same way as the arms in Cake-osaurus Rex but on a larger scale. I used modeling chocolate for the antlers and made them 2 days in advance so they were quite firm and fairly rigid when inserted into the head. For extra stability I poured melted white chocolate in to the holes for the antlers before inserting them into the head and then supported them until the chocolate dried completely. It's been four years since I did this cake and it's still one of my all-time favorite cakes, such a blast to work on! Go for it!

The neck is cake, stacked and mounted to the base board just like we do in the Cake-osaurus Rex class. The head was made from styrofoam at the client's request so they could keep it.

I used modeling chocolate around a wire frame. Similar to the way I make the T Rex arms in my Cake-osaurus Rex class, but on a much larger scale.
