What are you most proud of? I enjoy starting from scratch. I make a simple sketch on a piece of paper and add notes about the overall size. Sometimes there are surprises during construction. I counted on the pleated fabric for a visual effect during the design phase, but didn't quite see it coming--the roominess in the opening and belly of the finished purse. Improvising, I added a flap closure to secure the opening. I pleated the exterior purse, and pleated the lining too. Fitted both exterior and lining with pockets. I used every single bit of blue fabric (had less blue than turquoise to work with). It took some problem solving here and there to make the most of the smaller amount of blue fabric.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Yesterday I looked at photographs from 1904--the young lady Ragnhild "Randy" who used to live in my Queen Anne Victorian house with her siblings and parents. In one photo, she and her college classmates are getting ready to board a train for a class trip to Minneapolis-St. Paul. I look at her long Edwardian coat and huge hat and see she and her friend carry very small purses with short handles. What a surprise! In a design rut? My advice is to look at the past to inspire your designs. It always works for me. Thanks lots. Happy Sewing.

Hi artangel. Yes, the big quilt show in Chicago would be fun. I'll goggle it for details. Are you planning to attend? You could email me at my website 1893victorianfarmhouse. I recently updated access to my email address there. I don't know JW that you mentioned. I know the Red Mill.
