Instructions

You can make this skirt out of any type of woven fabric: cotton, polyester, etc. I made this one out of velvet. The side panels must be made out of some kind of stretch knit. The shape of it is an A-Line. See the full instructions by clicking on the link.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Whimsical, Cute, Mod, Classic, Romantic, Funky, Hipster

Materials

Velvet, Stretch Jersey, Fold over Elastic

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make a skirt that was more form fitting than those with the elastic casing waistband (as these must be wider and gathered so you can pull it on over your hips) but did not want to have to insert a zipper. This was a perfect solution!

What are you most proud of?

First time sewing with stretchy fabric and with fold-over elastic. It worked out fine, although only the two side panels are the stretch knit fabric.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure the stretch panels you add have the stretch going horizontally, i.e., around your body and not vertically, i.e., up and down your body.

I would drape myeslf in oh so soft velvet if it were socially accpetable, as George Costanza from Seinfeld has said.
