An awesome introduction to torching!!! I am a die-hard wire worker, bit I am definitely looking to combine my newly learned techniques with my wire work!!

Check out my great torching surface I found in my garage

Difficulty:

Category: Jewelry

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Mod, Traditional, Casual, Romantic

Materials

Sterling Silver pattern wire

What was your inspiration?

I bought a great little micro torch ages ago - played with it a bit with less than successful results, and put it away. I ran across Kate's free class moseying around Craftsy, and took a bash. I was so tickled to learn it's not near as hard or complicated as I thought it would be. I can't wait to get more time to practice, and have also gotten her next course Metalsmithing at Home. Now just need a 36 hour day :))

What are you most proud of?

I did do a couple of the stacking rings successfully, and jumped right into using the pattern wire. The ring turned out great!! I have to honest though, the fact the pattern seam is almost perfect was an accident - a really happy one, but I didn't plan it ;p

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be afraid to try torching. You can add some really great design possibilities, skills and techniques to your repertoire without burning down the house :))

I love that ring. Very inspirational. If only Kate hasn't mentioned that ii is a bad idea to try this stuff when you're tired. Oh well, soon. I have loved Rio Grande for years but never looked at the patterned wire. I'm on my way to check it our. You have a really bright, creative future. Way to go.

Thank you Karen! I zoomed in on the ring so close to show off the seam. Bangle bracelet??? What a great idea! :) *Note, must find rest of my pattern wire stash* :))

Beautiful!! Where did you get that patterned wire? Most I have found online are not that wide. Love the design of that!

Thank you KJewelry!!! All my wire pattern or otherwise comes from RioGrande.com - this one is 7mm wide and not the widest one they have - shop happy :)

BobbiWired, this is an awesome ring and exactly what I've wanted for myself. After I watched Kate's free video, I started searching to see if I could find a little wider wire to use. This is the exact width I was looking to try and make a ring with. Is this half round also (it looks it)? Do you know if RioGrande had it in gold as well? I'll have to look a little further (I kept finding the narrow wire). Thanks!!

Forgot to mention, I found a great micro torch at Walmart of all places. $25.00 with 3 extra attachments AND Butane!!! It pays to occasionally wander aimlessly through Walmart at 2am :))

Don't forget to look in the plumbing department Andie, that's where the tourch was in my local Walmart. my best advice Andie, is to just jump right in and don't be afraid to experiment. :)

I really liked your ring also. I needed some inspiration to get going. I have been buying odd& ends that I knew one day I'd use. I want to eventually become good enough 2 make jewelry full time. I just keep reading anything I can find to help me learn. thx & good luck to all. Anyone with any advice or ideas , feel free to let me know as I am so very new to this, anything will be greatly appreciated.
