This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Jean-ius: Reverse Engineer Your Favorite Fit »

Instructions

I used Kenneth King's technique for reverse engineering jeans to copy a pair of Talbots pants. They were made from 100% cotton twill. The pants had a side invisible zipper with fly shield and two darts per side in the back, front pockets and a button and hook and eye at the waist. If I were making them again, I might make the back alteration KK did with Sarah's pants to get rid of some extra ...

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic, Casual

Materials

100% cotton twill for fashion fabric and 100% cotton for pocket bags.

What was your inspiration?

The original pants and the Craftsy course.

What are you most proud of?

Having completed the course (and the pants) and that the finishing turned out so well. They are very close to the original pant. I'm also very happy that I have a template for a pant pattern that I like. I look forward to making them again.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It's not as hard as you might think. Try it!

You did a wonderful job drafting and sewing these pants. I also appreciate the comments that you made to other posters, it helps me in deciding if to take the class or not. Since you have a slim profile I thing a pant with a lower waist would also look nice on you.

Thank you. Since making this pair I've copied a different pair of store bought pants and made them out of a stretch suiting material. These are my current favorite pant. I don't have pictures though. The second time I copied a pair of pants it went much more quickly.

Could this be done for kids as well? Use their pants as patterns and constructing pants that fit them? The problem we have with my kids, is that they are so thin, it's difficult to find pants that fit even with the adjustable elastic waists.

Yes, you could use the techniques demonstrated in this class for copying children's clothes, in fact for copying any clothes at all!

Prof King does three alterations for the model that he is working on. You make a muslin and transfer the alterations you need to your pattern. The waistband he cuts longer than is needed and fits it on the pants. Hope this helps ...

Yes, thanks for showing us trousers. I don't own, and would never wear, jeans (they just don't suit me even a bit), so it's nice to see the method applied to something other than casual pants. Cheers!

Wow! They look like they are straight off the rack, except for the perfect fit. Kudos!

Very nice look and fit. What a good idea to apply KK's technique to slacks.
